What?! You said “You are one sexy momma!” to a prospect?

Sometimes when I hear “just be you” I am not sure how that translates in “real” life.  Through-out my life I have heard various “be authentic” messages yet only in the last two years am I beginning to take ownership of this concept. You see, starting at 6 years old I went to my first personal/spiritual development retreat (I still have a heart pin given to me at graduation).  I have always felt an inner agreement about “being myself” yet I have been cautious to act on this idea and even more reluctant to trust in it.

Are you like me? I experience fear and decide to play it safe. Later, I go over conversations in my mind rehearsing my “authentic  me” performance. Come on, we all do this! It is normal.

Well, normal but not all that nurturing for our growth (in all areas of our lives). What I am discovering in taking ownership of my “just be you” lifestyle is that life is really fun, fulfilling and even simple.  Notice I did not say easy.  The fear and self-doubt still show up, now I use them as the green light to take action from my heart and do it my way.

The other day I was on call with a potential client, who was a referral from a long standing client, and after she finished sharing about her and her business my first reply out of my mouth was “Okay, thanks. First I have to say, you are one hot sexy momma for being 67, I am so inspired by your commitment to taking care of yourself!” (During our call she told me she is 67 years old and therefore slow to take on technology.)

Then right way I thought ooooh, maybe I was too excited and should have kept that to myself. I mean really, she is a gorgeous woman and I couldn’t just pass over this amazing truth and start talking about business.  Right?

So, can you guess what her response was? She very confidently said “Yes, I am a sexy momma!” We enjoyed a giggle together and then started talking about her business and marketing needs.

Simply by sharing the “real me” with a new prospect I created a feeling of connection between who I am and who she is.  More importantly I honestly acknowledged something unique and special about her that most consultants or first time business associates would never say!

What I know for my clients is the more they share their unique and special skills, passions, thoughts and perspectives the more interactions they receive on their social media sites, blogs and newsletters.

You can start doing this too! Look at your last newsletter, blog or status update on facebook and ask yourself “What would I have written to a good friend or close relative?” This usually opens your heart and quiets the inner critic. Listen to the answer and take action right away.  Draft some status updates to share this week on facebook or be open-hearted in your next blog posting. When you market yourself from your heart, it opens your audience eyes to see your greatest offerings (and they will want more!).
