The Little Engine That Sucked…

You know the story The Little Engine that Could and how he overcame his challenges by positive thinking...well, I am proposing an updated version called The Little Engine That Sucked. It's still a story about reaching your goals but this time he is going to:

  • make mistakes,
  • look stupid,
  • feel afraid,
  • doubt himself,

AND continues on track to his vision.

It is time to shine light on the darker side of being an entrepreneur with the purpose of inspiring commitment, growth and willingness to be vulnerable when achieving your dreams. Be willing to lean into the uncertainty of what is just ahead. Be fueled by your unbridled passion to create your vision into your future. Because even if you are on the right track if you stop, the train it will eventually run you over!

Of course you are already using positive thinking, keeping a positive self-belief and surrounding yourself with supportive people but they will only take you so far when you reach the dark tunnel of doubt, resistance, and fear.

What will you do to keep moving? Here is what you do: you suck ass, you look stupid, you make mistakes and then celebrate how sucky you are doing!

Let me clarify what celebrating your suckiness means:

  • This is not a pity party.
  • This is not a chance to pull out all the reasons you can't move forward.
  • This is about embracing the imperfections you will create.
  • This is about loving YOU even when you don't want to.
  • This is about pure acceptance for all you bring into the world.

I'm declaring this week to be the "I totally sucked and celebrated it" week!

Are you willing to join me?

The answer is always…

"The answer is always love."

This has been my mantra over the last week, as I surrender to the flow of abundance and practice loving my money. The question I posed last week was how does a wholehearted savvy business owner approach challenges? Right now my challenge is the tangle of money & self-worth. The answer revealed to me was completely unexpected.

When a clients inquires about their marketing, my reply is "What is your desired outcome or end result?" This is important for their online marketing because we begin with their overall vision first and then work backwards to determine the best strategy of social media sites, the type of content, their most engaging audience, images, etc to support the development and growth into their desired outcome.

So, I used this question on myself "Adeah, what is your desired outcome in your relationship with money? And in relationship with your self-worth?" Then I held space open for the answers and listened carefully throughout my daily activities.  (Side note- This is an important part to developing into your desired outcome! Be open and listen for the answers to your questions.)

The heart of my desired outcome with money  is to hold the presence of grace and ease in my life.  It is not actually the money! It is the feelings I truly desire to experience. Knowing my desired outcome I started to reverse engineer a process to develop the presence of grace and ease in my life.

The process:

  • Self-love is the first step to elicit inner peace around my fears and challenges with money.
  • Be certain that the challenges are actually part of the process of my desired outcome.  The fear will pass. The other side of this process will be worth enduring the shadows (fear, doubt, resistance, etc.).
  • Weave unbridled joy into every action surrounding money.  Feel the grace and ease right now with each action associated with money.

Crazy! Huh? These answers were not what I could have predicted. Yet, I recognize this process with my clients who embrace wholehearted marketing for their business. The women who have the most success with their marketing, approach each challenge with self-love, faith and enthusiasm for the unknown.

What are you stuck with in your marketing? Ask yourself "What is my desired out come?" and wait for the answer to show-up.  I would love to hear your desired outcomes! Please leave a comment by posting your desired results with your marketing challenges.

A bun dance.

A bun dance by Adeah WetzelOwning a business includes generating an income and for me supporting others in generating more income in their businesses.  An interesting connection between money and self-worth has emerged during this journey of wholehearted living.  It has occurred to me that abundance and prosperity are an important part of wholehearted living.

These are my truths about money-

  1. Money is energy.  I call it green energy.
  2. Like energy (light for example), there is an infinite supply for everyone.
  3. A lack of money is simply a perception or a group of beliefs that create limits on the infinite supply available to you.

Shifting my beliefs about money has not been a simple process (is any personal growth journey ever simple?).  Acting in faith of these truths about money is SO SCARY! All kinds of resistance, doubt and fear cast a shadow over my faith.  I start looking to act and do and be the "right way" with my money.  Based on many experiences with the "right way" path it will never lead to abundance, only scarcity and increased fear.

So what is a savvy business owner  to do, to sustain a wholehearted way in life? Based on these truths of being human the first answer to any question is love.  And this is where I am exploring how to love my money.

What are you doing to stay in abundance? Are you challenged and even scared to take actions based on prosperity vs scarcity? Share your comments below.

The next post I will share what process reveals itself to answer with love.

Truths about being human.

After discovering Brené Brown's work I changed my way of being in my business. Making a change to my business name to Wholehearted Social Media was more than a declaration of my approach it has become an invitation to experiencing the raw wonder of being human.  Have you ever stood in line for a ride at a carnival not knowing which ride you would be taking? This is what my experience has been over the last 8 months.

Often I see personal growth and development in my clients when we dig into their marketing. It is an expected side effect when you are living your passion as your business.  However,  I was slow to accept that this process was unfolding for myself!  It was a mix of denial and a touch of "I can't handle this right now, I am running a business!".

Guess what I figured out? This is process is the very innards of a heart centered business. While everyone's journey to being the highest version of yourself is different I want to share a few of truths about being human with you.

  1. Love is the answer every time, no matter what question you are asking.
  2. Acceptance is simple but not always easy. Again love will clear a path to acceptance.
  3. Shadows (fear, doubt, resistance and other icky feelings that come up) are signs you are on the path of growth. Simply accept these as signals to your development and keep moving forward.
  4. Gratitude is a key. Use it to unlock grace, compassion and clarity during your journey.

What other truths have you discovered?

Let A 5-Year Old Tell You About Successful Marketing

Things I know about marketing have come from the most bizarre places. Turns out my 5 year old knows some awesome inside tips about marketing. Plus, she has agreed to let me share them with you.

Say It Out Loud!

Do you ever notice how young kids share everything with just about everyone? Are you telling enough people about your business? Tell lots of people about your business. Not how they can purchase your new book! Tell them WHY you created what you did and why you LOVE it so much. If you are at a networking event it is best to promote your social media sites, whichever one you are the most active on, because the purpose is to make a friend - not be the annoying cheese-ball of the networking group.

Wear a look like no one else.

5 years olds dress for themselves. Period. How are you dressing your image? Are you hoping to look like everyone else with a basic third person text website, no updates on your LinkedIn page since day one of setup, bi-monthly newsletters longer than your long john underwear?

These are not you! I promise whatever the little voice inside is whispering about your business give it a chance to come out. There is no right way to be yourself.

Be Picky And Proud Of It.

Picky eaters can be such a pain in the butt, however once you know “the food list” then it is a breeze. My guess is you are not being picky enough about who you market your business to and so it is a struggle.

You must stop saying “anyone, really can purchase my coaching (or your product)”. But if you are marketing to Mr. & Mrs. Anyone they aren’t buying…ever…so stop it!

Do it Just Because You Love it.

A 5 year old spends 80% of their day doing what they love to do and look how happy they are! Decide what you LOVE to do. Not what you think will make you money. First get clear on what thrills you and fuels your soul.

Now, who out of anyone in the world would LOVE to have what you are offering? I promise there is an image of a specific character that will come to your mind. Take an hour to develop this character with pen and paper.  Be as detailed as possible, does she like coffee or tea, organic cotton or blended cloth, scary movies or comedies, etc.

Once this character has developed hire her to join your marketing team (figuratively)! Every time you have a new product or event or copy to write on your website consult your newly hired team mate. Ask her "What would you get from this?" and "Do you like what I have here for you?"

Put yourself in her shoes. What excites her? What pains and struggles does your service or product serve? How will working with you improve her quality of life? Why is your product the best choice for her problem?

"Should" is Not a Business Model.

Somewhere after 5 or 6 years old it seems people stop being as they desire and more as they "should" in the world.  Yuck (and boring too)!  Being an entrepreneur can be stressful especially if you are trying to fit into a "I should" business model. There is room for joy, excitement and silliness in your business.

Does this resonate with you? In the comments below tell me how you will be more like a 5 year old in your marketing!

Balance…it’s the other white meat

11-a-balanced-life by Americanhell.comExploring life as a mother and a business owner is a fascinating adventure.  I have thoughts racing through my mind daily about finding balance between the many responsibilities that come with these titles in my life.

And just as often there are few, if any actions which satisfy my cravings for the fairness I seek between being a great mom and a successful business owner (not to mention the handful of other hats I wear!).  To be fair I felt this as an employee when I first became a mom; however in my mind the burden of success is higher for business owners than it is for employees.

My desire is to be all I can be in both aspects of my life.  As the years go on I am questioning if this balance can be achieved! So I have decided to search for the answer to this challenge.  Where do I begin?

Be careful what you set your heart upon-- for it will surely be yours.
-James Baldwin

What is Balance? A state of equilibrium or equality of distribution.

What is equilibrium? A stable situation in which forces cancel one another.

What is force? Coerce: to cause to do through pressure or necessity, by physical, moral or intellectual means.

This would mean my desires to be a good mother require me to coerce my desires to be a successful business owner in order to achieve a state of equality between these two desires.  Perhaps it is not balance I seek.

I invested in loving my kids from the day they were born and will continue to do so, without fail, for the rest of my life. I never “balanced” my life, I “optimized” it! - Janet Hanson, Founder & CEO of 85 Broads

While googling "balance" the  majority of the links lead to art & design websites. Every piece of information regarding balance included something about symmetry and asymmetry...now I am on to something!

The Greek meaning of symmetry is to measure together.

In reference to art and math symmetry means: An exact matching of form and arrangement of parts on opposite sides of a boundary, such as a plane or line, or around a central point or axis.

Symmetry is what I am seeking- a wholeness between the opposing parts. For me that means between being a fabulous mom (part 1) and being a fabulous business woman (part 2).   However I can recognize these two parts are only a small piece of the larger picture- back to all those other titles - that creates my life.  I can see this beautiful image- like a mandala that is my life.

Can you relate to this? If so how do you define this sweet spot? Leave a comment on how you create and define "balance" between the priorities in your life.

How and Why You Should Market Your YouTube Videos

Do you enjoy uploading videos that you made to the YouTube website?  If so, you may be pleased with all of the traffic that you get.  YouTube is known to get thousands of visitors a day.  For you, this means that your YouTube videos may be watched by thousands of people or more!  As much traffic as YouTube brings you and your videos, you may be looking for more.  If you are, you will want to examine other ways to market your YouTube videos.  Just a few of the many marketing approaches that you can take are outlined below.

Perhaps, the easiest way to market your YouTube videos is to let friends, family members, or coworkers know that you have videos available for viewing on YouTube.  For the best chance of success, you are advised to email the direct links for your YouTube videos to those that you know.  If you just happen to mention having your videos on YouTube to a friend in passing, let them know what your videos are about or what your YouTube screen name is.  YouTube allows site visitors to browse through all of their videos or search for something in particular, like one of your videos.

Another one of the many ways that you can market your YouTube video is by having any of your videos appear on any websites or blogs that you have.  What is nice about YouTube is that you can easily get a few HTML codes.  Those codes will enable you or any other internet users to post a YouTube video online.  It is not uncommon for bloggers to insert a YouTube video in their blog, by using generated HTML codes.  It is advised that you post your own YouTube videos on your own websites, but if you know of anyone else who has a blog, you may want to think about giving them the needed HTML codes to have your YouTube video appear on their blog.  In most cases, you will find that even strangers are willing to do so, as long as your YouTube video is connected, in one way or another, to their blog or website.

You can also market your YouTube videos on online message boards.  Online message board marketing can be done two different ways.  For instance, there are a large number of online message boards that let you discuss of share anything, in general, with other board members. You may want to think about posting links to some of your YouTube videos, especially if you think the other members would enjoy watching them.  If you belong to an online message board or forum that allows you to have a signature, you will want to look into doing so.  Your signature will always appear at the end of each of your messages; therefore, the more active you are online, the more exposure your YouTube videos are likely to get.

Now that you know a few ways that you can go about marketing your YouTube videos to other internet users, you may be wondering exactly why you should.  As it was mentioned above, YouTube, alone, is likely to generate thousands of viewers for your videos.  If you are looking for more views, whether just to increase your online popularity or to help you get new clients, if you connect your YouTube videos to your business somehow, you will want to take the time to market your YouTube videos.  What is nice is that you have a number of different methods available, including the three mentioned above, and most are free.  In fact, marketing your YouTube videos to other internet users isn’t only free, but it is easy to.  Many marketing tactics will only take up a few minutes of your time, if even that.

The decision as to whether or not you want further market your YouTube videos is yours to make. If you find yourself unsatisfied or unhappy with your current YouTube viewer ship, you may want to think about doing a little bit of your own marketing.
