Stop Expecting Results On Social Media

Stay with a process long enough and you will receive something from your commitment. This is a universal law- results come from a process. Actually if you look up the word "result" in the dictionary here is what you will see:

Definition of RESULT
1. Something that ensues from an action, policy, course of events, etc.; to proceed or arise as a consequence, effect, or conclusion.

The history of the word Result means to 'jump backwards'. The word originates from the Latin resultāre, re- ‘back’ and saltāre ‘jump’. In medieval Latin it came to be used figuratively for ‘happen as a consequence’.

Today it seems, 'Results' is used as a quick jump to the end result completely ignoring the process needed to arrive at the desired outcome.

7 Things I want you to understand about social media:

  • You choose who you want to interact and grow with...you have lots of control!
  • But those people you choose also choose you...or not!
  • Only posting status updates on your profile is not interactive.
  • Profiles are people...real people...who desire authentic connections...just like you.
  • Making friends in "real" life takes time. Making friends online is the same process..remember profiles are real people.
  • Only promoting your business, services, events and products is not interactive.
  • Facebook, twitter, youtube, linkedin, etc are not golden tickets they are simply tools (like email, text and voice mail).

Stop expecting results from social media if you aren't willing to show up consistently by making comments on others' posts, sharing your own content, and being interactive with people. Social media is a beautiful place to be with like minded people.

It is your unique energy, perspectives, values, thoughts, ideas, experiences, etc that allow people to develop a connection. It is through your consistent actions taken to develop these connections where you can expect results. If you are struggling to find the value of using social media look back at your actions in the last 6 months.  What do you see?

Let A 5-Year Old Tell You About Successful Marketing

Things I know about marketing have come from the most bizarre places. Turns out my 5 year old knows some awesome inside tips about marketing. Plus, she has agreed to let me share them with you.

Say It Out Loud!

Do you ever notice how young kids share everything with just about everyone? Are you telling enough people about your business? Tell lots of people about your business. Not how they can purchase your new book! Tell them WHY you created what you did and why you LOVE it so much. If you are at a networking event it is best to promote your social media sites, whichever one you are the most active on, because the purpose is to make a friend - not be the annoying cheese-ball of the networking group.

Wear a look like no one else.

5 years olds dress for themselves. Period. How are you dressing your image? Are you hoping to look like everyone else with a basic third person text website, no updates on your LinkedIn page since day one of setup, bi-monthly newsletters longer than your long john underwear?

These are not you! I promise whatever the little voice inside is whispering about your business give it a chance to come out. There is no right way to be yourself.

Be Picky And Proud Of It.

Picky eaters can be such a pain in the butt, however once you know “the food list” then it is a breeze. My guess is you are not being picky enough about who you market your business to and so it is a struggle.

You must stop saying “anyone, really can purchase my coaching (or your product)”. But if you are marketing to Mr. & Mrs. Anyone they aren’t buying…ever…so stop it!

Do it Just Because You Love it.

A 5 year old spends 80% of their day doing what they love to do and look how happy they are! Decide what you LOVE to do. Not what you think will make you money. First get clear on what thrills you and fuels your soul.

Now, who out of anyone in the world would LOVE to have what you are offering? I promise there is an image of a specific character that will come to your mind. Take an hour to develop this character with pen and paper.  Be as detailed as possible, does she like coffee or tea, organic cotton or blended cloth, scary movies or comedies, etc.

Once this character has developed hire her to join your marketing team (figuratively)! Every time you have a new product or event or copy to write on your website consult your newly hired team mate. Ask her "What would you get from this?" and "Do you like what I have here for you?"

Put yourself in her shoes. What excites her? What pains and struggles does your service or product serve? How will working with you improve her quality of life? Why is your product the best choice for her problem?

"Should" is Not a Business Model.

Somewhere after 5 or 6 years old it seems people stop being as they desire and more as they "should" in the world.  Yuck (and boring too)!  Being an entrepreneur can be stressful especially if you are trying to fit into a "I should" business model. There is room for joy, excitement and silliness in your business.

Does this resonate with you? In the comments below tell me how you will be more like a 5 year old in your marketing!

How To Make A Business Fan Page On Facebook

Making a fan page on facebook is a simple process. Fan pages can be used for business and pleasure; make a fan page for fun or as a marketing tool for your business. Fan Pages are often referred to as Business Pages.

To create a Facebook fan page you must first have a Facebook profile and be logged in. Information regarding your page should also be to hand – content, images etc.

Think about the title for your fan page – this is very important as Facebook will NOT let you change it. Take your time and pick your title carefully as this is what people will see when searching for your page and it is also what Facebook uses when searching for your fan page.

An eye-catching image is a must. This will draw users to your fan page. I feel a square image is best as Facebook will frame your image and crop it into a square icon. It is this square icon that will show in the news stream.

Now you are ready to create your fan page. Click on the link "Ads and Pages" link on the left side of your home page and then on the "Create Page". Select the category of the page and the title you thought of earlier -  I would advise on clicking the "Do not make Page publicly visible at this time." until you get your page looking just the way you want.

This is your page created. Editing the information is very similar to your normal facebook profile. Make sure you add your image and information about your page before you publish and start promoting. No one will become a fan of a fan page that is empty!

Customizing your fan page design is more complex and requires FBML & HTML knowledge however it is worth considering if you are serious about getting your brand image across!

Now invite all your friends to become fans – all of them (the more fans the better!)
