Let A 5-Year Old Tell You About Successful Marketing

Things I know about marketing have come from the most bizarre places. Turns out my 5 year old knows some awesome inside tips about marketing. Plus, she has agreed to let me share them with you.

Say It Out Loud!

Do you ever notice how young kids share everything with just about everyone? Are you telling enough people about your business? Tell lots of people about your business. Not how they can purchase your new book! Tell them WHY you created what you did and why you LOVE it so much. If you are at a networking event it is best to promote your social media sites, whichever one you are the most active on, because the purpose is to make a friend - not be the annoying cheese-ball of the networking group.

Wear a look like no one else.

5 years olds dress for themselves. Period. How are you dressing your image? Are you hoping to look like everyone else with a basic third person text website, no updates on your LinkedIn page since day one of setup, bi-monthly newsletters longer than your long john underwear?

These are not you! I promise whatever the little voice inside is whispering about your business give it a chance to come out. There is no right way to be yourself.

Be Picky And Proud Of It.

Picky eaters can be such a pain in the butt, however once you know “the food list” then it is a breeze. My guess is you are not being picky enough about who you market your business to and so it is a struggle.

You must stop saying “anyone, really can purchase my coaching (or your product)”. But if you are marketing to Mr. & Mrs. Anyone they aren’t buying…ever…so stop it!

Do it Just Because You Love it.

A 5 year old spends 80% of their day doing what they love to do and look how happy they are! Decide what you LOVE to do. Not what you think will make you money. First get clear on what thrills you and fuels your soul.

Now, who out of anyone in the world would LOVE to have what you are offering? I promise there is an image of a specific character that will come to your mind. Take an hour to develop this character with pen and paper.  Be as detailed as possible, does she like coffee or tea, organic cotton or blended cloth, scary movies or comedies, etc.

Once this character has developed hire her to join your marketing team (figuratively)! Every time you have a new product or event or copy to write on your website consult your newly hired team mate. Ask her "What would you get from this?" and "Do you like what I have here for you?"

Put yourself in her shoes. What excites her? What pains and struggles does your service or product serve? How will working with you improve her quality of life? Why is your product the best choice for her problem?

"Should" is Not a Business Model.

Somewhere after 5 or 6 years old it seems people stop being as they desire and more as they "should" in the world.  Yuck (and boring too)!  Being an entrepreneur can be stressful especially if you are trying to fit into a "I should" business model. There is room for joy, excitement and silliness in your business.

Does this resonate with you? In the comments below tell me how you will be more like a 5 year old in your marketing!
